Bible Studies at OSLC
Do Not Forget My Teaching
We are people of the Word of God. We believe that the Word of God is inspired by the Holy Spirit. We believe the Bible cannot err and is in itself inerrant. We believe the Bible is efficacious, that is, it is powerful. We believe the Bible is clear. The Bible is sufficient.
Our Pastors are given the task of teaching Christian doctrine from sacred Scripture to everyone at Our Savior, from young to old.
This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.
Bible Study Opportunities
Sunday Morning Bible Study
9:45-10:30 am in the Social Hall. This Bible study is taught by our pastor. We are currently studying the book of Proverbs. In the past we have covered both books of the Bible and topical studies. During summers we read and study a book together. (Previous studies have included A Martyr’s Faith in a Faithless World, Hammer of God, and Rediscovering the Issues Surrounding the 1974 Concordia Seminary Walkout.)
Sunday School and Youth Group
9:45-10:30 am starting in the Sanctuary. Sunday School is offered for all children and youth from preschool to high school. We use the Enduring Faith curriculum from Concordia Publishing House. This year is a Bible survey. Through this program the children learn Bible Stories, Bible History, hymns and prayers. Openings will often introduce the lesson and offer time for our Sunday School choir to practice. Class time involves 6 age-appropriate teaching done by our teaching teams (3-4 adults who take turns teaching, always having 2 adults in the room). Sunday School runs from September through May, and Summer Sunday School runs from June through August.
Youth Catechesis
3:00-4:30 pm on Sundays (September – Palm Sunday). Youth catechesis at Our Savior is a two-year process that begins when the child is ready according to the pastors and parents. The first year covers a basic overview of Christian doctrine and practice. The second year exclusively covers an in-depth study of the Small Catechism. Children in catechesis are expected to memorize the Small Catechism each year. The chief goal of catechesis or confirmation class is to prepare the Child of God to receive the Lord’s Supper. Near the end of catechesis, each child is privately examined for their readiness to receive the Sacrament of the Altar. The Rite of Confirmation is a tradition that is observed to allow the children to confess their faith publicly and the Church to receive them as fellow communicants.
Adult Catechesis
6:00-8:00 pm on Tuesdays (offered 1-2 times each year as needed). Visitors interested in membership, long-time members wanting for a refresher, and anyone just looking to know about Lutheranism are invited to attend this class. Adult Catechesis is designed to teach the basics of what Lutherans believe, teach, and confess and how that forms the way we live our lives as Christians. The class covers the Bible and Luther’s Small Catechism. As with youth catechesis, the goal is to prepare people to receive the Lord’s Supper and join the fellowship of our congregation. At the end of catechesis, new members are received in the Rite of Confirmation or by Profession of Faith.
LifeLight
10:00-11:00 am on Wednesdays in the Social Hall. This class meets every week except during the summer to go through a series of Bible Studies published by Concordia Publishing House called “LifeLight.” We are currently studying the book of Romans. The class covers books of the Bible and other theological topics. Participants are encouraged to prepare at home and engage in lively conversations and discussions about the Word of God.
Men's Bible Breakfast
6:30-7:30 am on the 1 st and 3 rd Wednesdays of the month in the Social Hall. We are currently studying 2 Thessalonians. Men of the congregation gather with the pastor twice a month to study books of the Bible and other Christian topics. All men are invited to bring their breakfast and join us for this study.
Our Lutheran Heritage
7:00-8:00 pm on Thursdays. This study is an opportunity to learn more about the Book of Concord and all things Lutheran. We are currently studying Martin Luther’s Large Catechism. In addition to studying the Lutheran Confessions, we will explore hymns, history, and anything else you wonder about the great heritage our Lutheran forefathers have handed down to us.
Ladies Bible Breakfast
8:45-9:45 am on the 1 st and 3 rd Saturdays of the month in the Social Hall. We are currently studying “The Devil.” This study involves several ladies gathering to study the Bible together around a good breakfast. Topics usually come from “Good News” magazine.
Vacation Bible School
6:00-7:30 pm for four nights in June. Each year kids from our church and community are invited to join us for Vacation Bible School. VBS draws many volunteers together with those kids for four nights in June where children learn Bible stories, sing hymns, make crafts, enjoy themed snacks, and play fun games. The goal of VBS is not just to have fun but to grow in the truth of who Jesus is and what He has done for us.
Groups and Board Bible Studies
Many of our congregational groups gather for meetings and have study time built into them. Our Boards also incorporate regular study into their meetings.
